Silver: Anomaly In Open Interest

Open interest is roughly 175,000 contracts, which is about 875,000,000 ounces of paper silver. At market price that is about $13 Billion, or only about 15% of what the Fed created each month during QE3. It would take very little digital currency, relatively speaking, to buy all the open interest, or to crush prices via naked sales of paper contracts. Stacks of physical silver are much safer and far more “real.”

How Gold And Silver’s Price Decline And Short Covering Was Manufactured

I can peg JPMorgan’s formerly manipulative short position in COMEX silver as now being no more than 8000 contracts and quite probably even lower. Never, since acquiring the massive short position of Bear Stearns in 2008, has JPMorgan’s silver short position been lower. Considering how much physical metal I believe JPM has accumulated (SLV, Silver Eagles, etc.), JPMorgan has never been better positioned for a real upside move in silver.

COT Report Shows JP Morgan Holds Lowest Silver Short Position Since 2008

Based on the latest COT report, Ted Butler calculates that JPMorgan’s short position in silver is now down to about 11,500 contracts, their lowest short-side corner in the Comex futures market since taking over the silver short position of Bear Stearns in 2008. And not to be forgotten in all of this, is the equally extreme short-side corner in the Comex silver market held by Canada’s Scotiabank.

No Improvement Yet In The Latest Commitment of Traders Report

I must admit that I was more than underwhelmed by yesterday’s Commitment of Traders Report. Although the numbers were headed in the right direction in both silver and gold, they weren’t the big numbers that both Ted and I were expecting. In a word, it was disappointing, considering the fact that we carved new low ticks in both metals every day during the reporting week ending on Tuesday, June 9.

Can The New Silver Fix End The Ongoing Silver Price Manipulation?

With the new silver fix, the allegations of manipulation through the old process are inapplicable anymore. Does it mean that silver price manipulation has come to an end? Not really, according to precious metals expert Dimitri Speck. He explains to GoldSilverWorlds that the “new” fix has the potent to improve the transparancy on the long run, and avoid of conflicts of interest. However, the main manipulation is taking place in the gold and silver futures market. These manipulations appear at any time, just more frequently during the fixing, so that it remains visible in the stats.

Huge Buying Ongoing In Precious Metals Futures Market

Huge Buying Ongoing In Precious Metals Futures Market

The new precious metals futures long buying didn’t start until Yellen, and it was massive too with speculators growing their long-side bets on silver by 1/6th in just two weeks. This continued the strong uptrend in silver-futures spec long buying we’ve seen since last September. Speculators haven’t been this bullish, had higher total longs, since back in February 2011 way before last year’s anomaly. And that proved a wise bet.

COT June 2014 – New Longs And Lots Of Short Covering

The accompanying charts show that, while the majority of the recent changes in the commitment of traders report have come from short covering, especially in Silver, there has also been some buying interest as well. Technically speaking, the precious metals sector still remains in a downtrend and has to overcome quite a few resistance levels before a bull market is to return.

Is Copper About To Pull Silver Higher?

Is Copper About To Pull Silver Higher?

The combination of long term chart support (if it can hold of course) in both copper and silver, extreme silver short positions by technical funds, and relaxing of extreme copper short positions, could be a healthy mix for silver going forward. It is worth to following this up closely, but for now we consider this a positive for both metals.
