Trump Turmoil Grows, Prompting Flight to Safety

Trump Turmoil Grows, Prompting Flight to Safety

Donald Trump has been dogged by efforts to undermine his presidency since winning the election in November. Deep State operators and political partisans have been working around the clock to hang a scandal around the president’s neck large enough to ruin him. If markets are any indication, they got some help last week from former FBI director James Comey. Comey’s leaked memo asserting the president tried to interfere with the investigation of Michael Flynn, the former National Security Advisor, prompted a selloff in stocks and a boost in precious metals. Democratic Congressman Al Green became the first in Congress to actually call for impeaching the president on the House floor. […]

Another Potential Government Shutdown… Oh My!

Another Potential Government Shutdown… Oh My!

The U.S. Congress runs up against their self-imposed borrowing limit once again this week. During the last tussle over the borrowing cap in October 2015, Congress agreed to schedule this week’s political theater to occur well after last Fall’s elections. They didn’t even bother to guess how much additional headroom would be needed. They just suspended the debt limit altogether. Neither Democratic nor Republican leadership wanted voters focused on borrowing and spending when they went to the polls. Government employees can count on eventually getting paid for any time they are furloughed. When the show is over, most in Congress will agree to saddle taxpayers (and their kids) with a […]

The Government Made a Mess They Can’t Clean Up

The Government Made a Mess They Can’t Clean Up

When I was a boy, I remember watching Richard Nixon on August 15, 1971 announce a complete “freeze” on “all wages and prices.” In today’s terms that’s what I’d call an attack on the free market. At first, his price freeze sounded quite generous for consumers. You’d not see the price of your gas or milk creep up. Sounded like a win-win. At the time, 75% of Americans, including my mother, thought price controls were a wonderful idea. She changed her mind only a few weeks later. During his speech that August night, Nixon severed ties between gold and the dollar. The gold standard ended. No longer would dollars need […]

Time to Hedge State Reserve Funds with Gold

By JP Cortez Financially prudent individuals set aside surplus funds to protect against unforeseen expenditures. This way, when faced with loss of income, house repairs, car trouble, or anything else, they will have a buffer against unanticipated downturns. In the same vein, almost every state in the United States has established a “savings account” for government operations. Primarily to mitigate a decline in tax revenues that comes alongside economic slumps, states have created so-called budget stabilization funds – colloquially known as “rainy day funds.” Every state takes a different approach to budget stabilization funds, from the mechanisms by which they are funded, to the caps placed on balances, to the […]

Europe Eyes Sweeping Cash Ban: Are Gold & Silver Next?

Europe Eyes Sweeping Cash Ban: Are Gold & Silver Next?

The global war on cash continues. The cabal of bankers seeking more transaction fees, busybody political leaders, and central bankers who want to experiment with negative interest rates recently threw India into turmoil by eliminating the two largest denomination bank notes. Now they are preparing a similar assault on Europeans’ ability to transact privately and without giving bankers a cut. European Union officials just published a “Proposal for an EU Initiative on Restriction on Payments in Cash.” Predictably, the restrictions are being sold to citizens as a means of fighting terrorism – much like a host of other privacy and liberty-destroying power grabs in recent decades. This despite a telling […]

Gold after Trump: How Gold Performed in 2016 and Price Forecast for 2017

Gold after Trump: How Gold Performed in 2016 and Price Forecast for 2017

We started 2016 with a strong gold price rally. It continued to grow for almost 6 months before the price started to stabilize. As with other trends on the market, gold price quickly entered a stall once everyone started to jump on the wagon. The recent U.S. Presidential Election, as well as other factors, will continue to influence the price of gold in 2017. Before you look at the price forecast, however, let’s take a closer look at some of the most prominent factors that influenced gold prices across 2016. The U.S. Dollar and China’s Economy China is quickly becoming a dominant force on the global market. If you look […]

Precious Metals v. Mining Stocks: What You Need to Know

Precious Metals v. Mining Stocks: What You Need to Know

Most readers of this column own (or plan to own) physical precious metals – gold and silver, perhaps even some platinum or palladium. They may also own mining stocks. But which category is “best”? It’s like asking, “What’s the most efficient exercise?” or “What’s the best fishing lure?” Truth be known, it’s really about what you wish to accomplish! Here is my considered opinion… Precious Metals Offer Insurance First – Profit Second One should strongly consider holding physical precious metals for “investment first, profit potential second.” The primary function of “metals in hand” is to help offset the possible loss of purchasing power that inflation or a changing business/regulatory climate […]

Pension Funds Need Gold before It’s Too Late

Pension Funds Need Gold before It’s Too Late

Tens of millions of Americans and their employers pour money into pension plans each month, counting those funds to grow and to be there when needed at retirement. But a time bomb awaits. The bulk of U.S. pension funds are dangerously underfunded, and the assets are often invested in securities that have bleak prospects for providing income that keeps up with a general decline in purchasing power. A pension plan requires an employer to make contributions into a pool of funds set aside for a worker’s future benefit. In 1875, when the American Express Company established the first private pension plan in the United States, the face of retirement was […]

Outlook for Precious Metals in 2017

Outlook for Precious Metals in 2017

Precious metals had a wild ride in 2016, launching higher in the first half of the year and then falling much of the way back to earth in the second half. Our outlook for 2017 hinges on some of the drivers that figured prominently in last year’s trading. There are also a couple of new wrinkles. Europe We’ll start with some fundamentals that metals investors have become well acquainted with in recent years. The troubles plaguing Europe seem to be forgotten, but they certainly aren’t gone. The question is whether or not officials in Europe will be able to keep the wheels on in 2017. Several major European banks remain […]

What are the Best Investments when Interest Rates are Low?

What are the Best Investments when Interest Rates are Low?

We’re currently living through uncertain times. Interest rates are at historic lows, and this isn’t particularly good news for savers. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to expand on your savings, or that opportunities aren’t present. There are still some great investments that you can make when interest rates are low. Here are just a couple. Property: Fixed Rate Mortgages In spite of low interest rates, the UK property market continues to boom. Prices have been rising steadily over the past decade, and even in the wake of Brexit, few experts are suggesting that this will end any time soon. As such, property is considered to be a relatively […]
